THE regent of Akungba-Akoko in
Akoko South West Local Council of Ondo State, Princess Oluwatoyin
Omosowon and two of her aides were yesterday kidnapped by yet to be
identified persons in Oba Akoko.
The 45 years-old regent, whose
whereabouts was still unknown, was abducted along Owo/Ikare express road
on her way to Akure where she was invited to a public function at the
Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA).
It was learnt that she was
forced into a car by unknown gunmen with her driver and two aides and
taken to an unknown destination.
Commercial and social activities
in the town were paralysed as residents protested against the abduction
of their regent and appealed to security agencies to ensure her urgent
release. A special prayer was held in the town yesterday by Muslims,
Christians and traditionalists for the release of Princess Omosowon.
The Chief Imam of Akungba-Akoko,
Alhaji Shittu Arikewuyo, who spoke on behalf of the community appealed
to security agents to assist in the release of the regent, just as he
called on all indigenes of the town to commence serious prayers for her
safe return.
Also, Venerable Olu Akerele of
the Anglican Communion said Christians in the town would continue to
pray until she is released. Efforts to get the reaction of the Police
Public Relations Officer (PPRO) on the matter proved abortive. But it
was revealed that the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Isaac Eke and
other high-ranking officers were in the town.
It was gathered that Eke and
other top security officials met with the traditional chiefs at the
palace of Alale of Akungba and assured them of ongoing efforts to ensure
the release of the regent.
In his reaction, the President
of Akungba Development Union (ADU), Dr. Bode Ekundayo, said the incident
is regrettable, adding that the incident was first of such in the
locality.
