The Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan has set up a committee of five members to retrieve campaign funds from party and government officials according to a report by SUNDAY PUNCH. Jonathan and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party had suffered stinging defeats in the March 28 and April 11 elections and the president believes all the campaign funds not spent or properly spent should be refunded. The total sum of over N2 trillion in cash was handed out to ministers, special advisers, assistants, friends, loyalists, campaign coordinators, support groups, associations and traditional rulers, most of whom were soundly defeated even in their own wards, polling units and local government areas.
The president is said to be angered by the fact that investigations revealed that a bulk of the campaign fund was used to buy palatial houses in Abuja and the finest automobiles while some of the money was also traced to the bank accounts of the high-ranking party and government officials who were supposed to disburse the money to voters and groups. The president is said to be determined to ensure his officials refund and account the money especially those who collected billions and refused to deliver their states. Some ministers got nothing less than N20 billion each.
