Peter Obi Visits Nigerians Injured In SA Xenophobic Attack.. READ HERE

The former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi, has paid a solidarity visit to Nigerian victims of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Peter Obi, who is in South Africa at the moment, took time to visit Nigerians who have been victims of the ongoing xenophobic attacks.

The former governor, who spoke at a meeting of the Nigerian Union, an umbrella organisation of all Nigerians living in South Africa, at the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg, called on South Africans to stop the attacks on foreigners, including Nigerians.

Among those in the picture are some Nigerians who managed to escape different attacks, but were wounded in the process.

He urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain law abiding and treat one another as brothers and sisters.

According to Obi, South Africans have more businesses in Nigeria than Nigerians in south-Africa, and the attacks were not necessary.

Obi said he was in South Africa to assess the situation and to offer assistance to Nigerians affected, adding that his coming was beneficial since he was able to see Nigerians with various degrees of injury as a result of the attacks.

He expressed optimism that the government of both countries would work towards forestalling such attacks in the future.

A number of people have been killed over the past two weeks since local vigilantes in South Africa started looting and attacking shops owned by immigrants, mainly from other parts of Africa.

The xenophobic attacks were said to have been triggered by a remark by the Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini, who said foreigners should “take their bags and go”.

The Zulu King has, however, denied the reports, saying that he had been misrepresented.

Ambassador Uche Ajulu-Okeke, the Nigerian consul general in South Africa, said Nigerians living in South Africa have lost more than N21m since the xenophobic attacks started.
