The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) says it is putting measures in place to secure tax relief for lawyers and companies who engage in certified pro bono work or free services.
President of the association, Augustine Alegeh, made this known during inauguration of NBA Stamp and Affinity Products, including National Pro Bono Centre, in Abuja on Wednesday, April 15.
"The NBA is working to ensure additional benefits for pro bono work and this would be made known to all members when it is finalised.
"One of the steps we have taken is to set up an NBA/Federal Inland Revenue Service Joint Working Committee where people who do certified pro bono work can get tax reliefs.
"Companies who support pro bono work will also be entitled to some tax reliefs to some extent when they are paying their taxes’’, Alegeh said.
Alegeh added that the setting up of the centre is part of the efforts to ensure justice for all Nigerians irrespective of their financial situation.
"This is part of our contributions to the development of our country and a clear demonstration of providing access to justice for all aggrieved persons despite their financial challenges.’’
The president said NBA is pleased by the willingness of its members to provide pro bono services and encouraged more members to go into it.
According to him, evidence of rendering pro bono services has become a requirement for lawyers seeking appointment and all privileges in the legal profession.
He, however, said there is a challenge of duplication inherent in the past efforts of carrying out pro bono work.
He explained that the NBA national pro bono centre will serve as a clearing house and coordination point for all pro bono work in Nigeria in order to reduce cases of duplication.
