In what can be seen as a family affair,
a 70-year-old mother, Moninola Lateef, and her son, Modiu, 35, were
among seven suspects paraded by the Ogun State Police Command at the
Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at Magbon, Abeokuta, after they were
arrested for armed robbery and kidnapping on Tuesday, May 26.
According
to the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Muyiwa
Adejobi, the septuagenarian was arrested after she sneaked her son,
Modiu, to a herbalist to extract bullets from his body after he was shot
by the police in a gun battle after he and his gang abducted a man who
just returned to the country from abroad.
According
to him, the suspects had been terrorising Abeokuta and its environs and
had been on the wanted list of the police. The PPRO disclosed that a
locally-made pistol was recovered from members of the robbery gang. He,
however, said that the septuagenarian and other suspects would soon be
charged to court. On the kidnapping case, Adejobi said the five-man gang
abducted a man in Ijebu axis of the state who recently returned from
abroad.
According to Adejobi, three of suspected
robbers and kidnappers claimed to be pastors while one of them said he
was a herbalist whose job was to deceive their clients with an offer of
spiritual assistance.
