Ondo court remands ex- FUTA VC’s killers

The Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Oke Eda, Akure, the Ondo State capital, has ordered the remand of Daniel Ita and Olayemi Bamitale; the two suspected killers of a former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Of Technology, Akure, Prof. Albert Ilemode .


Ita, the deceased’s gateman; and Bamitale, a former driver, were alleged to have killed the don, dumped his body in the garage and stole his RAV4 vehicle.

One week after, they were arrested by the men of the Ogun State Police Command and brought back to Ondo state on Monday.

The accused persons were arraigned on Wednesday on five counts.

According to the police prosecutor, Mr. Isah Atanegbe, investigation revealed that Ita and Bamitale conspired to strangle the deceased at his residence in Ijapo Estate, Akure, on June 21, 2015.

He said the offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol. 1, Law of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The charges read, “That you, Daniel Ita and Olayemi Bamitale, on June 21, 2015, at about 9pm, at number 1, Ikere Street, Ijapo Estate, did commit felony to wit: murder, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol.1, Law of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

“That you, Daniel Ita and Olayemi Bamitale, on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district, did kill one Prof. Albert Ilemobade, by jointly strangling him to death, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap.37, Vol.1, Law of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

“That you, Daniel Ita and Olayemi Bamitale, on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district, did conspire to commit felony to wit: robbery, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 403A of the Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol.1, Law of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

“That you, Daniel Ita and Olayemi Bamitale, on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district, did rob one late Prof. Albert Ilemobade of Rav4 jeep, 2008 model, with registration number, Lagos GGE 589 CF, value yet unknown, and the sum of N7,000, property of late Prof Albert Ilemobade, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 401 of the Criminal Code, Cap.37, Vol.1, Law of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.”

Atenegbe prayed the court to remand the suspected killers in custody until the outcome of the legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

In her ruling, the presiding chief magistrate, Mrs. Victoria Bob-Manuel, ordered that the accused be remanded in the Olokuta Prison, Akure, and adjourned the case till September 18, 2015, for hearing.
