Police arrested 127 suspected armed robbers, cultists and kidnappers.

The Rivers State Police Command on Tuesday paraded 127 suspected armed robbers, cultists and kidnappers.Those paraded at the State Police Command in Port Harcourt were 45 armed robbery suspects, eight suspected kidnappers and 74 persons alleged to be involved in cultism.


Different arms and ammunition ranging from pump-action riffles and AK-47 to locally-made pistols, double-barrelled guns and ammunition were recovered from the suspects.
Also recovered were 26 vehicles allegedly used for “illicit operations” within the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, said he was determined to rid Rivers State of criminals.

Ezike added that he observed that cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery and homicide cases were increasing and vowed to end the trend.

He added that the command’s determination to fight criminals to a standstill had yielded result as security operatives attached to the command located some of the suspects’ hideouts and arrested them.

He said, “In my inaugural address, I said my focus would be to provide quality service to the people of the state, fight violent crimes with vigour, partner with other security services, respect the rights of the citizens, abhor corrupt practices, promote professionalism and secure peace, security and safety for the state and its people.

“We have taken steps to address major security challenges in the state. Some of our achievements are arrest of armed robbers, kidnappers and cultist, recovery of firearms and stolen vehicles and rescue of kidnapped victims.

“For instance, on July 7, 2015, a three-man armed robbery gang operating with black Highlander Jeep was encountered by the police after robbing a man of over N2m. One of the robbers was arrested, while others escaped.

“Their operational vehicle was recovered and when searched, two AK-47 rifle with four magazines loaded with 92 rounds of 9.62mm ammunition as well as the money were recovered.

“Within the past 24 days, the SARS team arrested 45 suspected armed robbers, recovered seven AK-47 rifles, one SMG, three pump-action guns, 18 locally-made guns, 20 magazines with over 400 rounds of ammunition and 69 cartridges. Twenty six vehicles were also recovered.”

The state police commissioner pointed out that the achievements recorded so far by his command was as a result of the collaboration and support from government and the people of the state.

Ezike said more policemen had been deployed to the streets in major areas in order to help in tracking down crimes in the state.
